A historical account becomes clearer when we know where its information comes from. Who created a document, when, and for whom? What could its author have witnessed, and what came from someone else?

Event, document, interpretation

These are different levels of work with the past. A document can contain errors or reflect its author’s interests. Later researchers compare sources and propose explanations. An article should make clear where testimony ends and interpretation begins.

Statehood, Cossacks, and mythology

Separate subsections have been created for these subjects. The history of institutions calls for specific documents and context. Cossack stories and images are also valuable as cultural memory, but do not by themselves prove how an event unfolded.

The Institute of History of Ukraine is a starting point for reference material. Future articles should link to the particular works or documents they use. This introduction describes a method rather than settling disputed historical claims.
